Legally Married: What you need to know about the law
If
you're planning to get wed in a mosque or temple you will need to
inform your local Registry office in order to begin the legal
preliminaries for your wedding. The minister or leader of the religious
building in which you intend to get married should advise you whether
or not he is appointed to register marriages in the building. Although
it is common today for brides and grooms to have a separate legal
ceremony this is not necessary. In fact you can arrange for the
Registrar to witness your wedding at a religious building of your
choice and issue you with a certificate to validate your marriage.
THE STEPS YOU NEED TO GO THROUGH
Contact
the Registry Office to make an appointment once you have decided on a
date and venue for your wedding. This is the first step to ensure that
your marriage is acknowledged under English Law as well as a religious
law. You will both need to give 'notice of intention to marry' which
confirms that you have an intention to marry. A notice is only valid
for 12 months so if you're planning a long engagement it would be
better to do this at a later date. The Registry Office will tell you
what documents you will need to prove that you are legally free to
marry each other. The office will most probably ask to see your
passport, birth certificate and proof address.
Your wedding vows
You will need to make solemn declarations in addition to any changes to your vows. Remember the groom always goes first here! Here's your chance to practice...
I
do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment why I
(your full name) may not be joined in matrimony to (full name of
partner).
And later...
For the groom: I
call upon these persons here present to witness that I (your full name)
do take thee (full name of fiancée) to be my lawful wedded wife or
For the bride:
I call upon these persons here present to witness that I (your full
name) do take thee (full name of fiancé) to be my lawful wedded husband.
